Island Living

Figure out the ISLANDS in your life

I wonder if you're like me in that, when you learn something useful in one area, your mind starts to apply it to lots of other places too.🤔

Here's an example, which I shared with a client in a session this week.

Perhaps you know I'm a violinist as well as an EFT coach.😋 From way back I've taken online courses from the incredible teacher and musician, Nathan Cole. Recently appointed concert master of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, he is HUGE in classical music. He is also a talented and inspiring teacher and a genius at creating new perspectives for learning. 😍🤩

In one program I followed he shared a technique called 'Islands'.

Here's how you do it.

When you're learning a piece of music, the traditional procedure is to mark or ring the parts you still find hard or can't (yet) play.

It might look something like this.

That's certainly how I was trained. Focus on what you still can't do, go over and over it, figuring out ways to improve. Gradually (hopefully) clean it up.

If you're prone to sensitivity (AKA thin skinned) it can be a bit demoralising. But, generally, with perseverance, it gets the job done.

Nathan's technique turns it all around.

Take the same piece and, with a yellow highlighter, mark all the places that you can do easily. It can be a whole line or just one note.

The yellow highlighted bits are your islands, your safety zones, your places to rest. There you can:

  • Physically release tension
  • Enforce neural pathways of success and wellbeing
  • Let your nervous system know you can relax
  • Mentally give yourself a pat on the back
  • Enjoy yourself 😀

In between are the rough waters, the choppy seas, which you have to navigate as best you can...😱

But, as you practice, you gradually expand the islands until they become the prominent feature. And the difficult, hard, challenging bits, pale into, if not complete insignificance, at least they are temporary and get-overable.

It is a wonderful way to learn - truly empowering and affirming.

And, taking into account the idea of 'What you focus on expands', also a wonderful way to live.🙏

So here's the exercise that I showed my client (and which I love to do for myself.)

ISLAND LIVING 🏖

When you're lying in bed at night take a moment to mentally review your day and pick out the 'islands.'

  • That moment when your pets bundled out of their room to greet you in the morning.
  • That delicious cup of coffee or meal you prepared and enjoyed
  • That amazing blog you wrote (without AI, hehe!!)
  • That conversation or exchange which lit you up and connected you
  • That book you read, or show you watched, that entertained and/or informed you.

You get the idea.

Next, spend a few seconds to visualize, or create an impression of, your day made up of linking islands.

Even see that yellow highlighter, in your mind's eye, like glorious sunshine permeating your life.

And re-experience and bask in those feelings of joy, ease and connection. 🌞

Like all gratitude practices, the more you do it, the easier it gets.

You'll find yourself looking out for those islands and creating more of them in your day. The hard times will become less pervasive, permanent and personal... and the good times more prominent.

What do you think? Can you apply this musician's trick to your life? Let me know!

Have a fabulous week and always...
