SISU: The Power of Resilience

I learnt a new 4-letter word this week - but don't worry, it's uplifting, not offensive!! 😂

I was listening to some of the UN speeches - this one in particular by the president of Finland - and he talked about a quality, that after 800 years of occupation, he believes is embedded in the DNA of the Finns.

That quality - and that new word - is SISU. 🤔

He explained that 'sisu' means resilience. Determination, tenacity, bravery.🦁

Funnily enough, if you look it up, the standard translation of 'sisu' is Go !

Now, I don't know about you, but I often need to 'up my sisu'!!
I have to repeatedly

  • Remind myself of my strengths rather than my weaknesses.
  • Lean on what I know, instread of doubting and questioning myself so much.
  • Remember times I've been brave and tough, rather than fearful and cowardly.
  • Focus on my action-taking, purposeful self, instead of my procrastinating, hesitant part.

Where do you need a little 'sisu' in your life? Is it your health, your career, your relationships, or your outlook on the world?

I reckon many of us do, so I created an EFT tapping round for just that - incorporating some great quotes about resilience. While you are saying them, tapping round the points helps to clear any internal argument, doubt or fear that may come up.

Start by tapping on the side of the hand (here are the points in case you need them!)

Tapping Points

TAPPING SCRIPT FOR SISU (RESILIENCE)

Side of the hand:
Even though I need more 'sisu', I love and accept myself completely.
Even though I am often not as brave and strong as I would like, I love and honor myself completely.
Even though I find it hard sometimes to access my 'sisu'. I weaken, doubt, slow down, put things off and even give up. And I deeply and completely love, honour and accept myself.

Eyebrow point: I choose to 'up my sisu' and grow my resilience, courage and tenacity

Side of the eye: I'm learning from Nelson Mandela who said:
The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall."

Under the eye: And from Superman, Christopher Reeve - "A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles."

Under the nose: Carl Jung focuses on the power of possibility with "You are not what happened to you. You are what you choose to become."

Under the mouth: I choose to do as Christian D. Larson said: "Believe in yourself and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle."

Collar bone: When I worry about time slipping away I remind myself of what Confucious said: "It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop."

Uner the arm: I'm learning and growing and remembering "We develop our character muscles by overcoming challenges and obstacles."- Stephen Covey

Top of the head: I choose to increase my 'sisu', send myself love and compassion when I forget, and I'm following the advice of Vivian Greene - "Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, but about learning how to dance in the rain."
I choose to say 'Go!' to myself and a massive 'YES!' to life.

Take a breath and sit for a moment with that energy of resilience, determination, courage and tenacity. Your 'sisu.' 💪🔥💥🤗

I hope that helps to keep living this 4-letter word!
